What is General Artificial Intelligence and Strong AI and True AI and Weak AI and Narrow AI

The main concepts and what they represent:

  • General AI
  • Strong AI
  • True AI
  • Narrow AI
  • Weak AI

Some would claim that the overarching goal of AI is to make a machine intelligent enough that it can handle any general cognitive task in any setting, just like our own human brains.

The general AI ecosystem classifies these AI efforts into two major categories: Weak Artificial Intelligence – also called Narrow Artificial Intelligence -, that is focused on one particular problem or task domain, and Strong Artificial Intelligence – also called General Artificial Intelligence -, that focuses on building intelligence that can handle any task or problem in any domain.

From the perspectives of researchers, the more an AI system approaches the abilities of a human, with all the intelligence, emotion, and broad applicability of knowledge of humans, the “stronger” that AI is.

Strong Artificial Intelligence, or True AI, refers to Artificial General Intelligence, which is a hypothetical machine that exhibits behavior at as skillful and flexible as human behavior or Artificial Consciousness, which is a hypothetical machine with awareness of external objects, ideas, and/or self-awareness.

It could be misleading to think of narrow as weak, in the common sense of the word, since, from a task related – or problem solving – perspective, narrow may imply specialization at certain tasks.
